Notes: Speaker: Susan Katz WHY EVERY WRITER NEEDS an EDITOR Susan will tell you why it’s so important for every writer, of every level, to enlist the services of an editor. Even an editor needs an editor! Most people can’t find their own mistakes, from simple typos to major content problems. A writer can also be too close to the material to review it objectively. An editor will find the typos and grammar errors, and also ensure that the work makes sense. Did the writer change tenses all of a sudden? Are there too many flashbacks and do they help the story? Is there a better adjective than the one the writer chose? Editors will often rearrange or rewrite whole paragraphs to make them form a logical flow. They become the end-user and the audience. They’re the “fresh eyes” you need before you send it to an agent or publisher.

Evil characters help create conflict and tension; they make it harder for other characters to get what they need. In addition, fully developed bad guys can deepen the novel by exploring the nature of evil in our world. This program looks at strategies to write evil characters that both frighten us and reflect something of our own imperfect humanity.
