I enjoy researching history, mainly when applying it to my The Kelly Can Saga Series storyline. As we entered 2025, I recently looked up 1925 to see what important things happened a hundred years ago. In a future book, Charlie and Susan will live in 1925. Here are a few things I found.
What would become Delta Air Lines began as the world's first aerial crop-dusting company. A few years later, the crop-dusting company would become Delta. In "A Cowboy's Fortune," the owner of Skelly Oil, William G. Skelly, asks Charlie if he is interested in aviation. Charlie said yes, but …. Skelly became a big man in aviation and oil.
The second inauguration of Calvin Coolidge in Washington, D.C., was the first nationally broadcast U.S. presidential inauguration. Skelly was also involved in developing commercial radio. As a kid, I listened to Bob Wills and Paul Harvey on a Tulsa station Skelly owned for many years. Charlie and Susan might also get involved in radio. Who knows?
The state of New Mexico adopted its distinctive yellow flag exactly 100 years ago, and I thought it was cool that this happened 100 years ago. Breakers Hotel - Palm Beach, FL - 1925 The Breakers, the famous luxury hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, burned down. All the people inside escaped unharmed, including General Foods owner Marjorie Merriweather Post. She and Susan became friends in “A Cowboy's Fortune” when they met while Charlie and Susan were on their honeymoon. I may have to mention this fire incident when the story gets to 1925.
The classic jazz tune "Sweet Georgia Brown" was first recorded. I mention this only because I loved being able to go to a Harlem Globetrotters game in my hometown of Cushing. Oklahoma when I was in Junior High School. The Globetrotters play “Sweet Georgia Brown” during a pre-game exhibition of fancy passing and ball handling. What fun!
The Board of Regents of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) announced that they had selected a site in Westwood, adjacent to Beverly Hills, as the location for a new campus. I mention this happening in 1925 because Charlie and Susan will go to SoCal and own a
home in Beverly Hills. Yes, the oil business will get them out there, and their California home will be just off Sunset Blvd. and near the campus.
A lot more happened worldwide in 1925, but except for the Globetrotter story, these things I mention here will relate to the storyline somehow. I thought you might find this interesting.
