St. Louis was Great...the Trip Home was Too!

Jul 10, 2026 by E. Joe Brown

It's been way too long between blogs, and I’ll share what’s been going on now.

I attended the 2026 Western Writers of America (WWA) Convention in St. Louis from June 17th to 20th, and it was awesome.  Natalie Bright and I hosted a session focused on many important and historical events over the past 250 years since the American Revolution. We had so much fun doing that. We created a game show atmosphere with prizes. The first person to answer each question correctly received a prize. Then the person with the most correct answers got a grand prize. We gave out cozies and one ball cap. OK, so they weren’t the grandest of prizes, but the crowd seemed to have fun.

2026 WWA Convention fun!
Each night, we wrapped up the day with music. I joined some great singer-songwriters, and we entertained a welcoming crowd with country and western music.

Linda and I left St. Louis, being chased by stormy weather, heading south into Arkansas. We spent the night in Searcy, Arkansas, after deciding that our original plan to visit the “City Beautiful,” also known as Laurel, Mississippi, was not feasible. The rainy weather while we were in St. Louis had left much of Mississippi and Louisiana flooded.

So, from Searcy, we drove into Oklahoma, and over the next week, I visited four museums and at least seven public libraries in the state where I grew up and where Charlie Kelly and Susan also call home.

The museums were the Will Rogers Museum in Claremore, the Woolaroc Museum in Bartlesville, the Tom Mix Museum in Dewey, and the Ben Johnson Museum in Pawhuska. All of these play some role in feeding the storyline in the Kelly Can Saga. I’ve already been invited back to these museums, and we are working out the dates for my book signing/program.

The libraries are in Pauls Valley, Wynnewood, Davis, Ardmore, Durant, Atoka, Coalgate, and Ada. Every location is open to a future date, and Ada is already scheduled. This is a situation where Linda and I turned an unfortunate change in plans into something positive. I guess Lemons into Lemonade, right?

I’ll be in Duncan, Oklahoma, on July 25th at the Chisholm Trail Heritage for their Day of the Cowboy Celebration. Hope you can come by and say howdy.

Happy Trails,
Joe
